The University of Minnesota is trying to prevent the racist name of the Washington NFL team from being used at a stadium that received funds from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

The Minnesota Vikings are using the TCF Bank Stadium while they wait for their own facility to be completed. The team is due to play Washington on November 2 but University President Eric Kaler doesn't want the racist name used in promotional and other materials.

The Washington team's name is "offensive and should be replaced," Kaler said in a letter to Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minnesota), who also opposes the name.

In October 2007, the Shakopee Tribe donated $12.5 million to the university. Of that amount, $10 million went towards the stadium.
