Youth leader of Hoopa Valley Tribe charged with sexual abuse

Kayla Brown

Kayla Muriel Brown, a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe of California, is facing charges for allegedly sexually abusing a minor.

Brown, 21, is the reigning Miss Na:tini-xwe’, or Miss Hoopa Valley, A complaint accuses her of abusing a minor from June 2014 through January 2015 -- the alleged activity occurred in Humboldt County but it's not clear if it happened on or off the reservation.

Brown was taken into custody last week, John Chiv wrote on his blog. She missed a prior court date due to "medical issues," according to her attorney.

Chiv wrote that the case represents the first in the county where the alleged abuser is female and the alleged victim is a minor female.
