Tule River Tribe focuses on culture and language at new school

The Tule River Tribe of California opened its on school on the reservation.

The Towanits School has enrolled 37 students from kindergarten through third grade, The Porterville Recorder reported. Educators will focus on tribal culture and language while working to improve proficiency in English, math and reading.

"Our kids will outperform their peers in public schools,” Jerry Livesely, the director of the Tule River Education Department, told the paper.

The tribe hopes to expand the school to more grades in the future.
