Yakama Nation teacher works to keep Ichishkin language alive

Greg Sutterlict, a member of the Yakama Nation of Washington, is working to preserve the Ichishkin language.

Sutterlict serves as director of the Heritage University Language Center. He's teaching the language to young people in an after-school class and hopes to expand the program, NBC Right Now reported.

"The kids pick up on a stronger self-identity. I get to witness them as they grow stronger and more confident in the language," Sutterlict told the station.

Ichishkin is also known as Sahaptin. It is one of several languages spoken by tribes that make up the Yakama Nation.
