The Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa has canceled its 102nd annual powwow due to a death in the community.

The powwow began on Thursday and was due to run through Sunday. But the remainder of the event has been canceled, the tribe said in a press release. No further information was provided.

The event had already gotten off to a shaky start -- rain forced the evening session to be called off on Thursday night. A video posted on the Meswaki Powwow Facebook page showed a strong and steady storm.

The powwow regularly attracts hundreds of dancers and drummers and thousands of patrons.
