Setting ‘Fake News’ on notice

nativesunnews.today 2016 was a year when an ugly phenomenon climbed out of the cellar. It was called “Fake News” and there are so many ignorant and culpable people out there that much of the fake news was digested as truth and indisputable fact by them. Much of it had to do with snide and vicious fake news about Hillary Clinton. In fact one such item caused a deranged fellow to accost the owners of a pizza joint in Washington, D. C. because he read a fake news article that Clinton and one of her advisors was running a child porn and prostitution ring out of the pizza joint. He went to the pizza place to rescue the children and fired off a couple of rounds from an assault rifle. Luckily no one was hurt. This action was the main force behind pushing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to re-think how Facebook publishes news stories. It seems that Facebook has become a major purveyor of news real and fake. At first he denied there was any truth to the fake news phenomenon, but after the incident at the pizza parlor he changed his tune. But that is only one source that will monitor fake news. There are many more out there and some even have their own websites. And of course there are bloggers who can write anything about anybody true of untrue without fear of retaliation. We have our own living on and off the Indian reservations only too willing to stir up fear and consternation with half-baked news articles. They are the types of individuals who thrive on tearing down innocent people with lies and innuendo. Their main intent is to hurt, humiliate and destroy the reputations of reputable individuals. The news, good and bad, that you find in a daily or weekly newspaper has to be accurate. Oh, we slip up sometimes and get it wrong, but we have no fear of printing a retraction or in allowing anyone who feels that have been attacked wrongly to write a letter or a column rebutting any comments they found inaccurate. The same accord is not offered by the bloggers who would try to destroy you. There is no recourse to their damaging accusations except to take them to court and sometimes that is so costly that most people just grin and bear it. If we have erred in 2016 by publishing anything that was inaccurate we promise that we will do our best in 2017 to always get both sides and all sides to any news report critical of any individual. But remember this, our newspaper will always allow you to respond to any article you found unlikely with a letter to the editor or a personal column. That option is always there for you and believe us as a newspaper, that option is not available in many other newspapers. In fact all tribally owned newspapers or newspapers primarily financially obligated to any tribe will never allow anything critical of that tribe to appear in their newspapers. Regardless, we will try our very best to bring you the best Indian-owned newspaper in the Northern Plains and we will not shy away from investigative reporting whenever the need arises. There are times when tribal governments need to be taken to task and we will follow the dictates of our motto you will find on our opinion page, “Standing up for the people’s right to know.” With that we hope all of you have a better and more prosperous New Year. 2017 has got to be better than 2016!
