Covid-19 strikes hard at Crow Creek

Friday, September 11, 2020

BIG BEND — In a short amount of time, nearly 25 of the 80 residents of Big Bend, a community on the Crow Creek Reservation, had tested positive for COVID-19 in June and July. Now several of them are dead and life has not returned to normal.

The most recent person to pass away was 57-year-old Ethel Left Hand Bull who lost her battle after more than a month on life support in the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Left Hand Bull was a supervisor for the COVID-19 security team and a long-time fifth grade teacher at St. Francis Indian School. She would have received her master’s degree in education in August.

A majority of the people that tested positive in Bed Bend were COVID-19 security team members or close to someone who was. 38-year-old Wesley Fire Cloud Jr. and 34-year-old Randy His Law died of COVID in early July. All three were members of the security team.

Janice Howe, a citizen of the Big Bend community, is related to all three victims. She is Wesley’s mother, Ethel’s sister, and Randy’s cousin.

Howe described the current situation at Big Bend by saying “A lot of families are self-quarantining even though there are no orders to and the kids hardly play outside anymore.”
