Trust fund contempt trial wrapping up
Secretary of Interior Gale Norton finally took the stand in her own contempt trial, heralding the close of the long running proceedings.

Although her testimony only lasted 3 1/2 hours, it may be the one that convinces a federal judge not to sanction her for the handling of the Individual Indian Money (IIM) trust. But U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth was skeptical in some respects, wondering why he should trust her when past history has indicated otherwise.

Lamberth is expected to issue a finding within the coming weeks.

Pay now, reconcile later
After waiting weeks into a court-ordered Internet shutdown, the Department of Interior has finally decided to issue checks to thousands of royalty-starved American Indians throughout the country.

Acting on a "pay now and we'll figure it out later," Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles said the department would take a best guess at how much it owes landowners. The department would reconcile the balances later, when the "correct" amount is determined.
