Norton, Ashcroft confirmed by Senate
Beating his predecessor by a month, President George W. Bush saw all of his Cabinet nominees confirmed this week with Gale Norton and John Ashcroft finally surviving their Senate tests.

Both weren't confirmed without a fight, though, and a number of Democrat Senators rallied against the two controversial nominees. Norton was able to convert a number of doubters, however, and was confirmed by a vote of 75-24.

She also gained the support of a number of tribes, despite some leaders professing never having first-hand experience with her. Ashcroft on the other hand had the support of only eight Democrats, emerging with a 58-42 vote.

Bush reaches out
It was President George W. Bush's second week in office and he spent much of it reaching out to religious groups, African-Americans and the disabled.

Its all part of compassionate conservatism, or so the catch-phrase goes. Will tribes be part of this program? Do they even to want to be compassionately conserved?

If all goes as planned, the public might know soon. A number of tribal leaders hope to meet with Bush soon although its likely it won't be at all like the tribal leader bash President Clinton had back in 1994.
