George W. Bush reaches Presidential milestone
On Sunday, President George W. Bush reached his first
milestone: 100 days in office.
Yes, he actually lasted that long and overall, his approval
rating is good. He gets high marks on education and foreign
policy but low on the environment. His tax cut
isn't viewed as terribly important by the American
public and not every lawmaker is thrilled about his
budget.
He hasn't done much on Indian issues except to announce
he will nominate Oklahoma Secretary of Transportation to
run the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Neal McCaleb is
already in the midst of a political battle in his home state,
perhaps a predecessor of events to come.
Congratulations, W!

Administration hit on environment, budget
President Bush's environmental record has
been the subject of criticism from world leaders
and conservationist groups almost as soon as he
took office and lawmakers got their chance
to get their barbs in this week.
Secretary of Interior Gale Norton received
the brunt of the displeasure as members of Congress
quizzed her on everything from global warming
to tribal priority allocation funds. Her department's
budget will receive many changes, they warned,
come this fall.
Not everything was negative for Bush, though.
The Senate embraced one of his environmental priorities
and passed a brownfields bill aimed at giving
tribes and states more money to clean up toxic
industrial waste sites.
