McCaleb goes before Senate
Oklahoma Secretary of Transportation Neal McCaleb went before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee this week, a confirmation process by far the easiest of any Department of Interior nominee.

The warm welcome he got from Senators on both sides of the aisle was perhaps intentional. Why scare him away from one of the toughest jobs at one of the most difficult agencies in all of federal government?

Trust funds, law enforcement, economic development, education, federal recognition and transportation were just a few of the key issues McCaleb touched upon during his testimony. And they will be among the many he will face as soon as he is confirmed to head the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which is expected this week.

Meanwhile, other major Interior nominees continue to languish. Undersecretary choice J. Steven Griles, Solicitor pick Bill Myers, and Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management and Budget nominee Lynn Scarlett await further movement on their potential jobs.

Norton returns to Arctic
The Democrats say its a dead deal but that isn't preventing Secretary of Interior Gale Norton from making another trip to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to promote oil and gas development there.

The big difference between her previous visit and this one is her meeting with leaders from Arctic Village. The Gwich'in community opposes drilling in the refuge for fear it will damage the caribou herd on which they subsist.

Norton will travel to the village on Monday. On Tuesday she heads up to Kaktovik, an Inupiat Eskimo village where residents support drilling.
