EPA promises more tribal support

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Whitman spoke at a tribal environmental meeting in Nevada on Wednesday.

Whitman said the agency needs to do more to improve its services to Indian Country. Waste management, toxic site cleanup, water and air programs are needed, she added.

Whitman was also at the Sixth National Tribal Conference on Environmental Management to present the Swinomish Tribe of Washington with a $1.2 million research grant to study exposure to contaminants from eating shellfish.
