U.S. citizen arrested for terror threat

TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 2002

Attorney General John Aschroft announced on Monday the arrest and detention of an American citizen he said was a known terrorist agent plotting to detonate a bomb within the United States.

Abdullah al-Muhajir, 31, a former street gang member who converted to Islam, was detained May 8 after he returned to the U.S. from a trip to Pakistan. There, authorities said he met with associates of Osama bin Laden and learned to make a so-called "dirty" radioactive bomb.

U.S. officials said they didn't uncover actual plans to detonate such a device but that al-Muhajir was scouting locations.
