"Your June 5 story, "Casino makes recycling a priority," demonstrates howpervasive American Indian mythology is. Foxwoods director of environmental services, Michael Van Splinter, believes Indians were the "first practical recyclers," who used all parts of a plant or animal. This isn't true.

Shepard Krech III, professor of anthropology at Brown University, dispels the environmentally friendly myth in his book "The Ecological Indian."
