U.S. tones down objections to treaty court

THURSDAY, JULY 11, 2002

The Bush administration has dropped demands to exempt U.S. citizens from the jurisdiction of a war crimes court.

The administration wanted blanket sovereign immunity in the International Crimes Court. Instead, potential referrals of U.S. citizens to the court will be delayed by a year.

The court was established by treaty and will hear genocide, war crimes and other related cases.
