Tribes turn to power for revenue

MONDAY, JULY 15, 2002

Tribes in the Pacific Northwest, like those elsewhere in the country, are developing revenue- and power-generating businesses.

The Confederated Umatilla Tribes of Oregon are developing a 1,200-megawatt, gas-fired power plant on the Columbia River. The Confederated Colville Tribes bought a failing veneer plant to generate more local jobs and electricity.

The Makah nation of Washington is planning to develop the world's first wave-action powered generator. The Yakama Nation hopes to do the same with the Columbia River.
