Fla. find documents older Indian culture

Archaeologists are tracing the discovery of a network of waterways in central Florida to an Indian culture farther north.

The canals and use of mounds for burial grounds and homes ties the area to the Hopewell culture, they say. The Hopewell culture is based in the Ohio River valley.

The area in Florida was occupied for 1,500 years starting around 700 B.C., according to dating. Archaeologists say the "Ortona" Indians are not related to existing tribes.
