Restored Indian portraits go on view
WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2002 The Smithsonian Institution is putting on a new exhibit of 400-plus paintings of famed Indian portrait artist George Catlin. "George Catlin and His Indian Gallery" is considered the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of Catlin's work. Catlin documented a number of Western and Plains tribes in the late 1800s because he thought they would go extinct. The exhibit runs September 6 through January 19. at the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. Get the Story:
