Tribe in Argentina seeks autonomy

Up until 1994, the Mapuche Tribe of Argentina was barely recognized by the federal government.

A change to the constitution finally acknowledged the existence of the tribe, which numbers around 600,000. Most Mapuche tribal members live on reserves in rural areas.

In recent years, the Mapuche have been making land claims. The tribe also seeks greater powers of self-governance.
