Tribes wrap up canoe paddle journey

MONDAY, AUGUST 12, 2002

The Quinault Nation on Saturday welcomed more than 23 tribes to its Washington reservation, the final stop on a inter-tribal cultural exchange.

The tribes came in 20 traditional canoes as part of Paddle Journey 2002. The event brings together tribes in Washington and British Columbia, Canada, as a way of keeping paddling alive.

There was some rough sailing along the way, and a boat carrying 14 members of the Puyallup Tribe capsized in the Olympic Peninsula. The canoers were treated for some injuries at a local hospital.
