Indian students being left behind
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2002 Yaqui children in Arizona no longer have anyone to teach them their language, thanks to the No Child Left Behind Act. The law requires teaching assistants to have a high school diploma or GED this year. Many elder Yaquis weren't able to attend school. The law also requires assistants to have an associate's degree or two years of college, or pass a proficiency test. Assistants have four years to meet this requirement. Get the Story:
