Wash. tribes oppose judicial candidate
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2002 Washington tribes are opposing a state Supreme Court candidate whose views they say are anti-Indian and anti-sovereignty. Jim Johnson has fought tribes on treaty rights cases. He supported a bill by former senator Slade Gorton (R-Wash.) to waive tribal sovereign immunity. "He's son of Slade," Marty Loesch, an attorney for the Swinomish Tribe, told The Seattle Times. The paper said 10 tribes have spent $40,000 to fight Johnson. Get the Story:
