Statue of Shoshone chief headed to library

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2002

A rare statue of Shoshone Chief Washakie was donated to a library in Wyoming.

The 28-inch bronze sculpture is one of eight smaller copies of the 11-foot statue that represents Wyoming at the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. There are only three copies of the larger statue.

Washakie is credited with negotiating the creation of the Wind River Reservation as home for the Eastern Shoshone Tribe.
