Navajo council considers Peabody pipeline

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2002

The Navajo Nation Council will hold a special session Friday to consider a proposed pipeline to alleviate Peabody Coal's use of water in northeastern Arizona.

Currently, Peabody transports coal mined on the Navajo Reservation through a 273-mile slurry pipeline. The pipeline draws water from a source used by Navajo and Hopi communities.

The proposed pipeline would tap water from another source. Currently, there is a bill in Congress, sponsored by Sen. John Kyl (R-Ariz.), to allow Peabody Coal to trade water rights on the Colorado River with the Fort McDowell Tribe.
