Alaska Native quota to expire

MONDAY, JUNE 17, 2002

Alaska Native communities can take 75 bowhead whales this year before their hunting quota runs out.

A U.S. delegation went to the International Whaling Commission last month to secure a five-month extension. Approval failed by one vote after Japan convinced other nations not to support the quota.

Native whalers say they will continue hunting regardless, a move that could put the U.S. could be in violation of a treaty it has chastised others for breaking.
