Denied tribes seek Congressional help

WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 2002

Two Washington tribes rejected for federal recognition by the Bureau of Indian Affairs have found allies in Congress.

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) will introduce legislation for the Duwamish Tribe. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb last fall reversed a Clinton administration final decision to recognize the tribe.

Rep. Brian (D-Wash.) said he will do the same for the Chinook Nation, denied by McCaleb last Friday.
