Program supplies seeds to tribes

WEDNESDAY, JULY 17, 2002

The Native Seeds/SEARCH (Southwestern Endangered Arid-Land Resource Clearing House) began as a project to supply seeds for traditional plans to the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona.

The program has grown to incorporate native plants from 17 tribes. Corn, beans, squash and other species are collected.

Native Seeds worked with tribal elders to gain knowledge about traditional crops. At least 500 different corn types have been collected.
