Yup'ik man blends all traditions

THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2002

Henry Shavings is what one might call an Alaska Native renaissance man. Born in a Yup'ik home in 1929, he carries on his traditions through arts and crafts and fishing.

But he's also a music man whose love of country music has earned him the reputation as a Yodelin' Yup'ik. He sings, plays the banjo and has his own band called the Henry Shavings Crew.

Along with wife Hilma and their five children, the family used to perform together. Nowadays, Shavings performs weekly with a new bunch of musicians.
