Letter accuses police in shooting case

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2002

An anonymous letter uncovered in a Native protest case suggests Canadian police never intended to negotiate with activists who were occupying a park in Ontario.

The letter describes a police meeting held before the Ipperwash Provincial Park was raided by police in September 1995. Dudley George, a Chippewa man from the Stoney Point First Nation, was shot by police during the incident.

George's family is suing the Canadian government for his death.

September 7 marks the seventh anniversary of the raid.
