Police: Village teens traded berries for pot

MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2002

Police in Alaska believe teens in a Yup'ik village were trading berries for marijuana.

On September 17, Emmonak village police and the state troopers arrested a family of three. The father and son were allegedly in possession of marijuana and other drug items but it was the 75 pounds of berries in their freezer that sealed the deal.

Village police had received 15 calls of theft of berries, a traditional subsistence food.
