Trust reform still high on agenda
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2002

Next week, tribal leaders will meet for the 59th annual convention of the National Congress of American Indians. The results of the midterm elections will no doubt be a hot topic of discussion and -- as always -- trust reform.

At last year's session, the talk was all about stopping BITAM. After months of berating the Bush administration, tribes convinced Secretary of Interior Gale Norton to scrap her disastrous proposal.

But the failure of the joint tribal-federal task force to come to agreement on key issues has forced a whole new set of questions: What now? Should Congress be approached? The courts? What if BITAM comes back?

With that in mind, we're asking our readers to share their views by filling out our BITAM anniversary survey. Or, if we run into you at NCAI, we'll take your input there.

Thanks and good luck!
