Tlingit woman to receive honor from Queen

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2003

The Canadian government is bestowing a royal honor upon Bessie Cooley for her efforts to promote the Tlingit language.

Cooley is from the Yukon Territory. She served as an interpreter for the territorial government and now works for Sealaska Heritage Institute in Alaska.

She will receive the Golden Jubilee Medal, an award from Queen Elizabeth II, Canada's head of state.
