Indian lawmakers in Mont. oppose English only law

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2003

A Montana state legislative committee heard testimony on Tuesday on a bill to repeal the state's "English only" law.

Rep. Jonathan Windy Boy, a member of the Chippewa-Cree Tribe, is the sponsor. The bill is supported by other Native Americans who serve in the Legislature.

Windy Boy and others said repeal would show respect for Native languages and cultures.
