Editorial: Drilling supporters likely to ignore report

MONDAY, MARCH 10, 2003

A report from the National Academy of Sciences that details the "largely unfavorable" consequences of drilling in Alaska is likely to be ignored by Republicans and Secretary of Interior Gale Norton, The New York Times says in an editorial today.

The paper says impacts on the environment and Alaska Natives are a warning about opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to development. Drilling there is supported by Inupiat Eskimos who own a billion dollar corporation but opposed by the Gwich'in Nation.
