Schram on the Street: Say no to Indian mascots

"Contrary to what so-called 'traditionalists' say, I think white schools that long ago came up with a white notion of chief, tribe, squaw, or brave, wearing a loincloth, waving a tomahawk or outfitted in a feathered headdress, is simple stupidity thinly disguised.

To try and call them "complimentary, inspirational symbols" is an adventure in double-speak.

Want to compliment Indians?

Quite making them into caricatures. Quit stereotyping them."
