Study: Repatriated artifacts often contaminated

Research published in Environmental Science & Technology shows that repatriated artifacts contain elements of dangerous chemicals.

A professor at San Francisco State University studied 17 artifacts that were returned to the Hoopa Tribe of California. According to a chemical analysis, seven had a mercury level of more than 1 percent by weight, and one object had a level of more than 16 percent. Pesticides, including the banned DDT, were also detected.
