Power plant proposal includes Navajo Nation

The Navajo Nation is involved in a proposal for a new coal-fired power plant.

Steag Power wants to build the 1,500-megawatt plant near Farmington, New Mexico, to serve power users in Nevada and Southern California. The power would travel via a 470-mile transmission line that crosses Navajo land.

The tribe and its partner, Trans-Elect Inc., have secured almost all the rights of way needed for the $600 million project, a tribal engineer said.
