Mich. doesn't recognize off-reservation hunts

The state of Michigan doesn't recognize off-reservation tribal hunting and fishing rights, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The tribes have off-reservation rights guaranteed by treaty. But the state believes tribal members must comply with state hunting regulations and requirements, said Jim Ekdahl, DNR's specialist on tribal issues.

The tribes' off-reservation fishing rights have been confirmed by the federal courts.
