140th anniversary of signing of Fort Bridger Treaty

THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2003

July 2 was the 140th anniversary of the Fort Bridger Treaty, signed by Shoshone Chief Washakie and the U.S. government.

Washakie was hailed as a visionary for signing the treaty, which set aside millions of acres for the Eastern Shoshones. The Wind River Reservation in Wyoming has since been whittled down to 3 million acres and is also home to the Northern Arapaho Tribe.

Chief Washakie represents the state of Wyoming in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.
