Subsistence board to review trading practice

MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 2003

The federal Federal Subsistence Board is meeting this week to consider imposing limits on traditional Alaska Native bartering practices.

It's not the bartering itself that is being debated but whether hunters can trade their catch for cash and for how much. Natives say it is customary to barter but a non-Native group wants cash trades stopped.

The board is part of the Department of Interior and up until recently, it was titled towards Alaska Natives. Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles opened more of the membership to non-Natives.
