Houma women keep weaving tradition alive

THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2003

Weaving among the Houma Nation of Louisiana is making a comeback, thanks to the efforts of some woman.

The half-hitch coiled baskets are characteristic of the tribe but the technique has not been in use since the 1950s. A tribal member learned the technique from a Colorado museum curator and is passing it on to others.

The Houma Nation was denied federal recognition by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1994. At least one group has split off to pursue acknowledgment.
