First Nations call for new land claim ruling

TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 2003

Two First Nations from British Columbia asked Canada's Supreme Court on Monday to overturn a decision denying them monetary damages for a land claim.

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled against the Cape Mudge and Campbell River First Nations. The bands later discovered that Justice Ian Binnie, who wrote the opinion, played a role in their case when he served as a government attorney nearly 20 years ago.

The case is Wewaykum Indian Band v. Canada.
