BIA forgets to seek surplus property for tribe

FRIDAY, JULY 25, 2003

The Bureau of Indian Affairs forgot to file papers to transfer a former air national guard base to the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians.

The tribes are first in line to recover the 43-acre property. But the General Services Administration never received paperwork from the BIA even after allowing an extension.

The tribes filed a suit to stop the GSA from declaring the property as "surplus" and allow other parties to obtain it.
