Gathering grabs spotligh

The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico became the temporary home to North America's largest powwow this past weekend, the 17th Annual Gathering of Nations.

Shakin' it up at the Pit. Friday April 28. Opening Friday morning, dancers from across the US and Canada had already formed long lines into the Pit, hoping to give the weekend their best and maybe even win some of the coveted prize money. The public showed up soon after, with hardcore circuit goers staking a claim to the best seats in the 17,000+ capacity arena.

Actor Michael Horse (Zuni/Yaqui/Mescalero Apache), a Gathering regular, attended this year's event in multiple roles: host of the Miss Indian World pageant, art exhibitor, and pow wow dancer. Of all the years he has been attending Gathering, Horse said most memorable has been hosting the pageant.

"These Native women are so focused, so dedicated, so respectful of tradition. They inspire me to go back and continue my work with youth at risk," said Horse, who works with gang outreach programs, before participating in the Gourd dance on Friday evening.

The busiest day of Gathering, however, came Saturday. Even though high winds temporarily closed the artisans tent, the crowds kept turning out. The day got off to a rockin' start with a special performance by Kickapoo/Creek singer Arigon Starr, currently promoting her sophmore effort Wind-Up.

Gathering also said goodbye Saturday to the outgoing Miss Indian World. Mitzi Tolino (White Mountain Apache/Navajo) ended her reign as cultural ambassador and Indian Country representative.

Gore at Gathering. Saturday April 29. Image © KOB-TV	The evening also got a special surprise when Vice President Al Gore paid a midnight visit to The Pit. Gathering goers lined up to get a glimpse and shake hands with Gore, in town on a campaign stop. But the night didn't end there. Gathering kept going until after 3am on Sunday morning, proving that Indian Country couldn't let such an exciting weekend end so easily. There's always next year...
