Aid for Indian Education Arrives
APRIL 25, 2000 A 25-member Indian education advisory committee was named Monday by the Nebraska State Department of Education. | Members of the committee include Indian educators and leaders from throughout the state. The commission will develop a comprehensive statewide policy to address the needs of Indian children both on and off the reservation. Documentation of the failures in Indian education came in the form of a special series by the Omaha World Herald earlier this year. The series prompted state officials to take action. Goverenor Mike Johanns took action in his own way, vetoing a bill last week that would have provided an additional $1 million in funding to Omaha Nation and Winnebago public schools. In response, both school boards passed resolutions to go forth with a lawsuit against the state. Litigation plans are expected to be finalized next week.
