Senate rejects school vouchers

By a vote of 58 to 41, the Senate defeated an amendment to an education bill that would have let low-income children receive vouchers for private schools in three states and ten cities.

While many Democrats oppose vouchers, a number of Western conservative and Northeastern moderate Republicans provided the votes needed to kill the measure. It had been sponsored by Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.).
