University plans tribal partnership

JUNE 21, 2000

The University of Nebraska at Lincoln unveiled a plan on Tuesday that would create a partnership with tribes, tribal colleges, and tribal residents of the state of Nebraska.

A steering committee will focus on three areas, including recruitment and retention of Native students and faculty, promotion of tribal economic development, and work with tribal colleges.

Native Americans make up 0.9 percent of the state population and 0.4 percent of the university's student body.

Tribes in Nebraska and the Plains have had problems with the university over the repatriation of human remains. A professor was recommended to be fired over mishandling of the remains but no action was taken against him.
