Researchers find historic Pueblo logging sources

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2001

Researchers from the University of Arizona say they have identified the source of logs used by the Pueblo occupants of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico.

The researchers say the Chuska Mountains and the San Mateo Mountains provided more than 200,000 conifer trees used to construct homes and buildings at Chaco more than a thousand years ago. Both forest sources are about 50 miles away from Chaco.

Previously it was thought the occupants traveled longer distances to obtain timber.
