NMAI funds preserved in budget

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2002

The National Museum of American Indian survived President Bush's budget ax on Monday, seeing preservation of $10 million in construction funds.

Many had feared President Bush would cut money for the Washington, D.C., museum as part of a larger slash at the Smithsonian Institution. A reduction in funds could have delayed the opening.

But the Smithsonian in fact is seeing a $9 million increase in Bush's budget.
