Calif. bill outlaws mascots

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 2002

A bill under consideration in California outlaws the use of Indians as mascots at public schools and colleges.

Native American activists are pushing for the measure and haven't run into significant opposition. The ban would start in 2003, making California the first to eliminate mascots on a statewide basis.
